What
Gets in the Way
.
. .
Family,
work and friends all keep us rightfully away from our writing
work but in the grand sceme of things, these are our
work. However, there are aspects of each of these that wil
try to disuade us from devoting more hours to writing. Family
for instance; birthday dinners, taking mom to the doctor,
picking the kids up from school, spouse with a flat tire are
all necessary activities. Friends drop by unannounced, loved
but intrusive. You think: "I'll kill 2 birds with one
stone". So you visit with a friend while you shop, clean
the kitchen while you talk on the phone, Instant Message your
kids teacher while you sew up a hem. Still, the fact remains...
you are not writing, are you?
The
office. We all have to do something to win our daily bread;
please the boss, turn in the report, drop off the FedEx, get
home in time to help the kids with their homework. It all
has to be done... but you're not writing, are you?
Another
avenue: entertainment. All work and no play makes you a bitch,
but how much is too much? Can't you always find some silver
lining to write about from the night club or a trip to Tahoe?
Maybe, but you're not writing, are you?
So
finally you sit down at the keyboard with plenty of material
and you get - - mental pictures of him...

or
you hear the tea kettle that you forgot you turned on, or
the phone rings. While you're day dreaming about Josh Holloway
or the Lost victims you turn off the kettle, make yourself
a cuppa and hear the answering machine screen the call about
cleaning your carpets and your imagination has you rolling
on the rug with Sawyer. If you could just get it down on paper!
Arrrg!
This
column is for the distractions that could become more
of that yummy inspiration stuff. So, if you're a bit dry,
maybe my mental ramblings might set off some bell of yours.
Just remember, my stuff is kinda neurotic : )
